Newel and Schiller orchestrate FRISCH AUF! Göppingen's opening victory against Erlangen

The victory rested on two pillars: a compact, alert defence and a high passing tempo in attack. Göppingen took an early lead, pulling clear for the first time at 5:2, and although Erlangen repeatedly closed to within a goal thereafter, the hosts never relinquished control. The half-time score stood at 17:13, and in the second period the home side extended their advantage to as many as five goals, managing that cushion expertly until the final whistle.

Elias Newel was outstanding, orchestrating the entire attacking play and finishing as his team's top field scorer with seven goals. Alongside him stood Marcel Schiller, who converted five from five attempts from the seven-metre line and contributed seven goals in total. The backbone came from Kristian Sæverås, who won the goalkeeping duel with eight saves and repeatedly left Erlangen frustrated in front of goal.

For the visitors, Yannik Bialowas stood out: with eleven goals, seven of them converted seven-metre throws, he was Erlangen's most prominent performer, but could not halt the deficit single-handedly. Marek Nissen added five goals from the back court. Crucially, the Franconians too rarely found the fast-break game they sought, because the necessary turnovers failed to materialise.

After the match, Bialowas identified the turning point himself: "In the first half we make far too many technical errors. And then it's difficult to make that up here in this arena."

From the very first attack, Göppingen stamped their authority on the match. After the early 5:2, the hosts had set the tone, whilst Erlangen went almost five minutes without a goal of their own and coach Johannes Sellin called an early timeout. The Franconians did repeatedly close to within a goal, but Göppingen responded each time and immediately restored the gap to three or four goals.

The interplay between a rock-solid defence and swiftly executed attacks was decisive. Time and again, Newel brought his teammates into scoring positions even under pressure, whilst Schiller converted his free throws and penalty throws ruthlessly. So it stood at 17:13 at the break, a scoreline that reflected a first half that had gone exactly to plan from the hosts' perspective.

Elias Newel described the approach at half-time: "Above all, we wanted to bring emotion with the crowd here and a real fight, and from good defensive play we naturally come forward with a bit more momentum as well."

The decisive phase came midway through the second half. Erlangen did start the second period with purpose, but Göppingen pulled away relentlessly and extended the lead to five goals for the first time. Sæverås made several saves during this spell, whilst the attack maintained its effectiveness through width and repeated breakthroughs. Despite numerous suspensions on both sides and several stoppages in the closing stages, the advantage never came under serious threat. Only in the final minutes did Erlangen reduce the deficit once more, without endangering the outcome.

Marcel Schiller summed up the performance afterwards: "We solved it very confidently at both ends. Took away their fast-break game on our own. That was clear from the outset: if we manage that, it's half the battle."

With the first two points, Göppingen climb to fourth place in the still-young table, level on points with the other victorious teams from the opening round. There is little time to digest the result: the English week continues as early as Wednesday, 2 September. Göppingen travel to MT Melsungen, whilst Erlangen host TSV Hannover-Burgdorf in their first home match.
