Simon Möller becomes late saviour: Flensburg edge out impressive Eisenach

Just two goals separated the sides at the final whistle, yet the scoreline barely reflects the drama of the contest. Flensburg secured both points primarily thanks to their outstanding shooting efficiency and a crucial late surge, while Eisenach held their own for long stretches, showing courage and testing the title contenders from the outset.

Simon Pytlick was the standout performer for Flensburg, finishing as top scorer with seven goals and also catching the eye as a driving force from the back court. He was supported by Aymeric Minne, who contributed six goals on his competitive league debut and repeatedly sparked the hosts' attacking machine. Captain Emil Bergholt delivered a combative start to his new role with five goals at a high conversion rate and a strong presence in defence.

For Eisenach, Gian Attenhofer and Elias Scholtes stood out with five goals apiece. Attenhofer converted all his attempts and proved a reliable outlet on the right wing, while newcomer Scholtes made important contributions with his shots from the back court. The visitors' performance, however, was underpinned by a united team effort and remarkable emotion.

The decisive turning point came with SG's change in goal: Simon Möller entered the match with the score at 24:24 and made five saves in the closing stages. Just as Eisenach were turning the match around, Flensburg found their way back on track through their goalkeeper.

Flensburg made the brighter start and pulled ahead to 6:3 through purposeful fast-break play. The first half was marked by an exceptional goal rush: 38 goals were scored before the break, with SG using their high shooting percentage as their sharpest weapon. Eisenach, who initially struggled to get a grip on the game, gradually adjusted to the hosts' attacking play and remained within striking distance thanks to some impressive offensive moves. Flensburg led 20:18 at half-time.

After the restart, the momentum shifted. Eisenach adjusted their defence, pressing higher and winning more duels. The visitors turned the match around and took the lead through Vukasin Antonijevic at 28:30. During this phase, Flensburg went several minutes without scoring and came under pressure.

But with the change in goal and a return to form, SG found their footing. Marko Grgić equalised at 30:30 for Flensburg, before the hosts took control in the closing stages. Grgić contributed important goals during this period, Emil Jakobsen converted his seven-metre throws confidently, and Simon Möller kept things tight at the back. Pytlick sealed the 33:31 final score, with a last free throw going unconverted.

Captain Peter Walz expressed his pride after the match despite the defeat: "I'm just incredibly proud of the team. We worked so well all week and stuck to the game plan for almost 60 minutes. We came here with full commitment and said we had nothing to lose. Flensburg are clearly the favourites, but if the door opens, we want to go through it."

Bergholt, meanwhile, assessed the narrow victory with self-criticism and highlighted his goalkeeper's contribution: "We had a difficult period in the second half, and Simon Möller helped us well there." He was satisfied with the points, but not with the defence: "Happy with two points, but not good enough, because in defence we weren't as compact today as we'd like to be."

Flensburg continue on Wednesday, 2 September, away at Bergischer HC. Eisenach host HBW Balingen-Weilstetten a day later, on Thursday, 3 September.
