Handball Bundesliga GmbH Modernises Own OTT Platform for Handball Fans Outside the DACH Region and Digitalises TV Distribution

Monday, September 7, 2026

Just weeks after the early renewal of its media rights agreement for the DACH region with Dyn Media for a further three years through to 2032, the HBL GmbH is deepening its collaboration with its media partner to further advance the international reach of the Opel Handball-Bundesliga outside the DACH region. Central to this effort is a comprehensive relaunch of the HBL's own OTT platform, "HBL TV", through which the HBL is offering more than 600 Bundesliga fixtures live internationally during the current 2026/27 season.

  • HBL TV to broadcast more than 600 live matches in the 2026/27 season; two subscription models available
  • Low-latency and cost-efficient: Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) replaces satellite transmission for TV distribution
  • HBL modernises technical infrastructure and lays the groundwork for more scalable international distribution of the Opel HBL
  • The relaunch of the HBL's own streaming platform "HBL TV" and the transition of international TV distribution to SRT technology marks a quantum leap in the digital reach of the Opel HBL for markets outside the DACH region.
Dyn Media will take on the role of technology service provider, driving the further development of the platform. The result is a state-of-the-art infrastructure that delivers a premium user experience to the growing international audience of German handball outside the DACH region. Since 2022, the HBL has operated its own OTT platform, providing direct access to live matches and on-demand content in all countries where the HBL has not exclusively licensed its rights to broadcast partners. Most recently, the HBL GmbH has secured attractive broadcast partnerships for North and South America as well as India. Matches from the Opel HBL and the 2. HBL are now available through international partners in more than 80 countries.
The HBL offers two subscription models: The HBL TV World package covers all competitions of German handball in full depth, giving fans access to live and re-live broadcasts as well as highlights from the Opel HBL, the 2. Handball-Bundesliga, the Lidl Final4 for the DHB-Pokal and the Rexel Super Cup at the start of the season. The HBL TV Plus package provides access to live and re-live matches and highlights from the 2. HBL, as well as highlight content from the Opel HBL, the Lidl Final4 for the DHB-Pokal and the Rexel Super Cup — this offering is available to fans in all countries worldwide.
Maxi Elze, Head of Media Rights & Development at HBL GmbH, comments: "By fully transitioning from traditional satellite transmission to the SRT standard, we are fundamentally modernising our technical infrastructure. With this IP-based, low-latency and cost-efficient signal distribution over the internet, the HBL is creating the ideal conditions for a more flexible, scalable and future-ready distribution of Opel HBL matches internationally."
HBL TV World is available at a price of €3.99 per month or €39.99 per year. HBL TV Plus is available for €1.99 per month or €19.99 per year. The availability of individual subscription packages varies depending on the country of access and the applicable rights situation.
